Your chance to have your say on the purpose of the Australian Public Service (APS) is here.
All APS employees and the public can contribute to creating one common purpose statement for the APS.
“Why does the APS need a common purpose?” you might ask. A common purpose statement will set out our unified vision and make it clear what the APS aspires to.
This will help us work better together, make decisions and plan for the future.
Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, Minister for the Public Service, announced the government’s intention to create a clear and inspiring APS purpose statement. This is one of the proposed changes to the Public Service Act 1999 to help the APS better serve the Government, Parliament, and the Australian community.
Everyone can contribute to the new purpose statement.
This work comes on the back of findings from the Independent Review of the APS, which identified the need for an overarching APS purpose statement.

What is the deliberative committee?
Around 40 APS employees will be selected to form a deliberative committee that will develop the purpose statement.
The committee will balance insights from the public and staff gathered through the consultation process.
The committee will develop options for the purpose statement and those options will then be put to a final online vote later in the year. APS employees and the public will have a chance to vote on the options, with the final purpose statement slated to be announced in September.
