The Australian Public Service Commission virtual Human-Centred Design course

The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) recently piloted a virtual Human-Centred Design (HCD) 101 course to staff across the Australian Public Service (APS).

The 10-week, part-time virtual course took staff through an end-to-end HCD process to design products and services with the needs of people and business at the centre. The course was run together with other agencies, including Services Australia and Home Affairs. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and attendees explored and presented many innovative policy issues.

The course was developed from APS Academy and BizLab HCD 101 training courses. These are widely published and used by other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries.

The APSC is running a second pilot of the course this year from September to November 2023, with a larger cohort of students. Registrations for the next pilot close late August or when places are filled. To register go to APS Learn.

The APSC will keep building our capability, making sure the public service is trusted, future-fit, responsive and agile to deliver on critical priorities identified in the APS Reform agenda.
